Courses
At Essa, we offer a tailored English curriculum that is personalised to meet the needs of every student. After Year 7 there are a variety of options open, and students follow different routes through the school depending on their attainment levels and interests.

We are passionate about using technology to enable our students to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Visit the blog to see some examples of our students' work!

Year 7 - In Year 7, all students are offered a rich and varied English curriculum. Topics include Shakespeare's Macbeth, poetry from around the globe, the novel "Stone Cold" and the adapted play of Dickens' "Oliver."

Functional Skills - students following the Functional Skills course focus on developing their core skills in spoken and written English prior to starting the GCSE course. They study a range of topics including a novel, media and advertising, autobiography and a contemporary play. The course can itself lead to a qualification in Functional Skills,
which is equivalent to half a GSCE.

GCSE English (Edexcel)- students following GCSE English study a mix of language and literature, including poetry, Shakespeare, creative writing and a novel.

GSCE English Language and GCSE English Literature (Edexcel) - students following the double award course gain two GCSEs in English. They study a variety of topics including spoken language, Shakespeare, contemporary drama, poetry and two novels (currently "Animal Farm" and "Of Mice and Men").

GCSE Digital Communications - students following this course study...

ESOL - ESOL classes are offered for international new arrivals to enable them to access the English curriculum.
Entry level qualifications in English are also available.
