French @ Essa
French is a core subject in the Academy. In Year 7, all pupils are either taught French or German and this language is then carried on throughout their Academy life. Currently, French is taught
within the New Basics curriculum by one of our French teachers. The French is taught in context
of the rich tasks and current topics include buildings in the town, endangered species and fair
trade. This builds upon any previous French knowledge and aims to prepare them for
the foundation, and ultimately GCSE courses.
Foundation French is then taught for two years, in order to develop pupil's listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Topics covered include Family & Home, Free time, Holidays and
Eating & Drinking. This course provides a solid foundation for pupils to then progress to GCSE.
Upper school pupils are entered for GCSE French (AQA). Pupils complete four controlled assessments over their GCSE course; two speaking and two writing, each worth 15% of their final grade. Listening and Reading skills will be assessed
in final exams in the summer of year 11. These final exams each count for 20% of the final grade. Pupils enjoy learning about topics such as The Environment, Tourism and The World of Work.
This GCSE counts towards the EBAC.
ICT is actively used within the department and we subscribe to many online learning portals, which pupils have access to
in school and at home to encourage independent learning.
Pupils have the option to participate in an annual trip to Paris, run by Mr. Karasz, Strand Leader. Pupils always find it very rewarding to put their French skills into practice and come back much more confident and enthused for language learning. As with learning any language, French will improve your employability in the future; showing that you are not only open
to learning new languages but also accepting of other cultures and traditions. The skills gained from the act of learning
a language will remain with you and your communication skills will be developed.
