Geography in New Basics
The Geography Department support New Basics in the planning and delivery of one of their Rich Tasks: British National Identity.
This comprises of an interview and a trip to the Lake District:
Geographical fieldwork at Orrest Head, Windermere and land use survey at the village
of Staveley.
Edexcel GCSE Geography Specification A
The new Edexcel GCSE in Geography A has four units. This allows for a flexible modular teaching approach,
where students can study a unit, complete the assessment and then move on to the next part of the course.
The fieldwork element of this course is now found in the controlled assessment unit.
This GCSE will count towards the EBAC.
The Edexcel GCSE in Geography A comprises of four units:
Unit 1; Geographical Skills and Challenges (25% of the total GCSE)
Overview of content
This unit has two sections, both of which are compulsory material:
• Section A – Geographical Skills This covers cartographic, graphical, geographical enquiry, ICT and GIS skills.
• Section B – Challenges for the Planet This covers issues that have arisen from climate change and sustainable development.
Overview of assessment
• This unit is assessed through a 1-hour, tiered, written examination with a total of 50 marks. There are 25 marks in Section A and 25 marks in Section B. The exam will contain a mixture of question styles.
Unit 2; The Natural Environment (25% of the total GCSE)
Overview of content
This unit has two sections:
• Section A – The Physical World Students complete Tectonic Landscapes.
• Section B – Environmental Issues Students complete A Wasteful World.
Overview of assessment
• This unit is assessed through a 1-hour, tiered, written examination with a total of 50 marks. There are 25 marks in Section A and 25 marks in Section B. The exam will contain a mixture of question styles.

• Section A – The Human World Students complete Population Change.
• Section B – People Issues Students complete A Tourist’s World

Unit 4 Investigating Geography (25% of the tool GCSE)
• Internally assessed with controlled conditions.

• For this unit students need to complete a fieldwork investigation and report. They must complete one of the tasks provided by Edexcel, on one of the following themes: Coasts, contemporary, countryside, environmental, rivers, tourism, transport and urban areas.

• This unit is an internally assessed unit with controlled conditions. Students complete one of the fieldwork tasks from the list provided by Edexcel. They must write it up under controlled conditions.
• The task is marked out of a total of 50 marks, across the following areas: purpose of investigation, methods of collecting data, methods of presenting data, analysis and conclusions, evaluation, planning and organisation.
• The task will be marked by the teacher and moderated by Edexcel.

Trips
The Geography Department organizes trips for our students to visit the Lake District National Park. We examine the effects of glaciation, river features, farming, land use, tourism and issues in National Parks. These topics are studied at KS3 and KS4 Geography.
We also invite students to climb Scafell Pike the highest mountain in England in order to raise money for charity.
Mr. Patel and Mr. Fraser will be taking a group on a three day residential trip to Snowdonia National Park in July 2012.
