German @ Essa.
German is a core subject in the Academy. In year 7, all pupils are either taught French or German and this language is then carried on throughout their Academy life. Currently, French is taught within the New Basics curriculum by one of our French teachers, but pupils who start in September 2012 will begin German. The German taught will be based around the rich tasks
being taught in New Basics, for example topics such as local buildings, parts of the body and currencies of the world.
Foundation German is then taught for two years, in order to develop pupils' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Topics covered include Food & Drink, Free time and Holidays. This course provides a solid foundation for pupils to then progress to GCSE.
Upper school pupils are entered for GCSE German (AQA). Pupils complete four controlled assessments over their GCSE course; two speaking and two writing, each worth 15% of their final grade. Listening and Reading skills will be assessed in final exams in the summer of year 11. These final exams each count for 20% of the final grade. Pupils enjoy learning about topics such as The Environment, School and Home Town.
This GCSE counts towards the EBAC.
ICT is actively used within the department and we subscribe to many online learning portals, which pupils have access to in school and at home to encourage independent learning.
As with learning any language, German will improve your employability in the future; showing that you are not only open to learning new languages but also accepting of other cultures and traditions. The skills gained from the act of learning a language will remain with you and your communication skills will be developed.
In December, pupils in year 8 were invited on a trip to the Manchester Christmas Markets with Miss Greenwood and Mr Warburton. They travelled by train to the city centre and then explored the international, and in particular German markets. This gave the pupils a taste of German culture and Christmas traditions, as well as the chance to practice some German! Unfortunately, it never stopped raining and both staff and pupils were throughly drenched on return to the Academy but nobody let that dampen their spirits! Fingers crossed for better weather next year!
