Mathematics - A Gatekeeper Of Success In All Fields Of Life
Mathematics is known as one of the gatekeepers for success in all fields of life. As such, we in the Maths Faculty consider it to be more than a subject. It is conceived as a key for problem solving and prepares students for practical life. We provide students with a platform to develop their knowledge, skills, logic and analytical thinking. Our teaching methods aim to increase curiosity, which we believe helps students to be more creative and develop connections. This not only helps them in Maths but leads to the development of students’ ability to solve problems in almost all fields of life.
In Years 7, 8 and 9, we focus on teaching practices that introduce mathematical concepts in a fun and engaging environment. These are aimed at developing students’ confidence in fundamental mathematical concepts. Students are made to consider the relevance of their findings as they connect their mathematical learning to the real world. This enables them to conceptualise their learning before they apply it to GCSE questions. As students move into Year 9, our approach to teaching changes. The teaching scaffolds their learning and revisits all the mathematical concepts previously taught, as well as new topics.
At Essa Academy we currently offer the AQA course. The course offers two tiers of entry: the Foundation tier covers grades 1 to 5, the Higher tier covers grades 5 to 9. Students follow a two year certification course and take the examinations in Year 11. We aim to have taught all the content by December of year 11 so that we can personalise the learning for each student, and focus on strengthening those areas that challenge each student.
