Welcome to New Basics

'We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future'

A curriculum that combines real world experience with an
intrinsic drive...

The New Basics Curriculum is futures-oriented, which provides the students with 21st Century skills that will enable them to flourish
in 'new times'.

The Curriculum is 'transdisciplinary' - in other words, rather than focus on subject areas in isolation, our students cover all areas of knowledge at GSCE level and beyond whilst tackling real life issues and organising community events. When talking about New Basics, it is necessary to hold on to the notion of the 'Old Basics', which include Literacy and Numeracy and will always remain at the heart
of New Basics.

The New Basics Curriculum is delivered by learning and teaching strategies called
'The Productive Pedagogies'. The 'Productive Pedagogies' underpin the basic art
of teaching and is one of the many driving forces behind the mission statement
here at Essa Academy 'All will Succeed'.

Year 7 Structure

Year 7 are segregated into 3 groups called 'The Pods'. They study 4 projects throughout the year called Rich Tasks which each last 9 weeks. Each Rich Task involves a real time end product that the students work towards. The 4 rich tasks are British National Identity, Science and Ethics, Built Environment and Celebratory Performance.

Some of their end products include an Oscars Ceremony where the student present a multimedia presentation and in Science and Ethics the students plan, organise and deliver their own conference.
