The Physical Education Department at Essa Academy is a very forward thinking and innovative department that offers all students a wide range of opportunities for sporting achievement and academic attainment. As a faculty we aim to develop students knowledge, understanding and skills in a variety of activities, as well as educating them on the importance of a healthy active lifestyle.
Key Stage 3:
In years 7 and 8 students will undertake 2 sessions of core PE, where they will participate in an extensive range of sporting activities such as: football, netball, rugby, cricket, dance, basketball, fitness, trampolining, gymnastics, badminton, athletics and rounders.
Key Stage 4:
In years 9, 10 and 11 students will undertake 1 session of core PE again covering a range of activities. However, if they choose to study GCSE Physical Education or BTEC Sport they will undertake a further 2 sessions that will be solely dedicated to their chosen route.
Edexcel GCSE Physical Education
The 2016 GCSE Physical Education (9-1) Specification develops knowledge through practical application and encourages a holistic understanding of PE.
The GCSE Physical Education Specification focuses on the following areas:
develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin physical activity and sport to improve performance
understand how the physiological and psychological state affects performance
perform effectively in different physical activities by developing skills and techniques and selecting and using tactics, strategies and/or compositional ideas
develop their ability to analyse and evaluate to improve performance
understand the contribution which physical activity and sport make to health, fitness and well-being
understand key socio-cultural influences which can affect people’s involvement
The course comprises of four components with a weighting as follows: 60% theory, 30% practical performance and 10% analysis and evaluation. Below shows a further breakdown of the overall qualification:

Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Sport
The BTEC Award gives students the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. The main focus is on four areas of equal importance, which cover the:
processes that underpin effective ways of working in sport such as planning and leading an individual or team sporting activity session, taking into account the needs of the participants. This also includes an understanding of how body systems respond to participation in sport.
development of the skills required to lead sports activities and improve performance
knowledge that underpins effective use of skills, process and attitudes in sport such as roles, responsibilities and leadership styles.
attitudes that are considered most important in sports leadership, including personal management, communication and problem-solving skills
Students are required to complete and achieve all the components included in the qualification: Component 1: An Introduction to Sport and the Sport Industry Component 2: Improving own and others Sporting Performance Component 3: Planning and Leading a Sports Activity Session
Component 1 and 2 are assessed through internal assessment and component 3 is externally assessed.
Essa Academy’s extensive facilities include a state of the art Sports Hall, 3G AstroTurf, three netball courts, four tennis courts, playing fields accommodating a football pitch, rounders pitches, athletics track and a dance studio. The PE faculty offers a wide range of lunchtime and after school extracurricular clubs, where we compete against other schools across the borough. Activities offered change every half term, so there is always something new to try.
