The Arts – The Creative Hub of the School

All students study Art and Design, Drama and Music throughout Key Stage 3. In Key Stage 4 the Arts subjects then become an option. In our modern society, jobs for students with creative abilities are vast and in high demand. The Arts gives us the skills to think outside the box and find creative solutions to problems. In addition studying an arts subject has been found to raise performance in other subjects.
In the Summer term we hold an ‘Arts Festival’ that allows the community to come in to school and celebrate the success of the students work. We also take the Arts work to Bolton University and compete with other schools in Bolton.
We run lunchtime and after school clubs for all year groups. A selection of our clubs are: The school show, Props making, Art around the Academy, Guitar/drums and singing lessons, DJ technology and catch up sessions for our Key Stage 4 students.
We have visited places such as New York, London and various local Theatres and Galleries.
KEY STAGE 3
At Key stage 3 all students carousel around each of the four subjects. In Year 7 and 8 they will do 8 weeks of Art, Music, Drama and Photography.

Assessment at Key Stage 3:
All students will be assessed using a baseline assessment at the beginning of every subject. This will then be measured against a final project at the end of the 8 weeks. Students will be graded a W4- 9 based on the schools assessment framework.
KEY STAGE 4
We study AQA Art and Design at GCSE. This specification provides students with a wide range of creative, exciting and stimulating opportunities to explore their interests in Art and Design in ways that are personally relevant and truly developmental in nature. The requirements of the specification allow for the study of Art and Design in both breadth and depth. It provides progression from Key Stage 3, and a strong and appropriate foundation for further progression to career pathways.
- Natural and Man Made Forms – Embedding the formal elements through observational drawings, printmaking and mixed media/textiles.
- Identity – Contextual study on an Artist using Chalk and Charcoal, Sculpture and Photography.
- Passions and Obsessions – Three artists studied – Charcoal, self portrait, Colour studies of objects linked to identity. A2 watercolour pencil study inspired by Morgan Davidson.
- Conflict – A replica of the externally set examination using the starting point of the theme ‘Conflict’. Students have 10 weeks to research artists, develop and explore ideas, techniques and materials leading to an independent outcome.
Examination: Papers are handed out in January. Students will choose one of 7 starting points and have 10 weeks to prepare work. During which time they must research artists, develop and explore ideas, techniques and materials leading to an independent outcome. The outcome takes place over the period of 10 hours under exam conditions.
AQA’s GCSE (9–1) in Drama provides a fantastic curriculum to ignite and engage learners’ creativity, passion and interests. The main purpose of this qualification is to allow learners to study drama in an academic setting, interrogating this art form and applying their knowledge and understanding to the process of creating and developing drama.
- Too much punch for Judy – A script based around Drink Driving this scheme is based on exam preparation and performance technique such as character.
- Hillsborough – A script studied by the students looking at intentions, playwright, history through research and developing a stage awareness.
- Kony 2012 – This is a stimulus for students to devise from and it is based on a real life incident in Uganda.
Year 10 and 11
Unit 1: (40%) Students begin the exam. They will get 12 different stimuli that we explore as a class. Students will then devise their own performance to be recorded and sent to the examiner. Students will write a working log along side this covering character, rehearsal process, improvisation, semiotic, social, historical, cultural evaluation.
ASSESSMENT: Students will be assessed based on the AQA UNIT 1 marking criteria based on the performance and log book.
UNIT 2 (20%) Students must learn how to contribute to text-based drama in live theatre context for an audience. Each student must choose to be assessed as a: Performer, lighting, sound and set designer. Students will study ‘Find Me’ by Olwen Wymark.
Assessment: Texts in practice (Externally assessed with an examiner) on the performance they produce from the text.
UNIT 3: (40%) 1 hour 45 minute written exam. The content of the lessons will help develop students to understand the characteristics of performance text(s) and dramatic work(s). Students will cover all aspects of exam: Genre, structure, character, form, style, language, subtext, character motivation and interaction. Students will also explore staging the use of stage directions, character, context, costume, design and directing. We are studying Blood Brother by Willy Russell. Live theatre performance: Othello
Students will, through looking at pop and film music, develop an understanding of the foundations of music such as chords, basic notation and world music (such as blues music, incorporating 12 bar blues and walking bass line). Discover how to use apps to create, record and perform music in AQA GCSE Music. In NCFE Music Technology students work as a team to compose your own pieces and appraise each others. Explore the skills needed to learn a selection of musical instruments such as keyboard and guitar.
- Component 2: Solo Performance and Component 3: Free Composition
Students will select or research a piece of music to perform for their Solo Performance piece and rehearse and practice this piece to a high standard. Students will also compose a composition using Logic Pro X in any style.
- Component 2: Ensemble Performance and Component 3: Composition to Brief
Rehearse and refine a performance piece for their Ensemble Performance coursework. Compose a piece of music in a set style of their choosing using Logic Pro X and Learn key words for external exam in Y11.
Full revision for:
- Component 1: Understanding Music External Exam (1 1/2 hours, 40% grade)
Students for the external element of the GCSE course will complete a 1 1/2 hour written exam covering all the keywords covered during the course.
NCFE MUSIC TECHNOLOGY:
- Unit 1: Using a DAW (30 hours) students for this unit are required to understand the basics of setting up and operating a DAW (Logic Pro X) completing a composition to a set brief then a review. Computer components e.g. iMac, midi keyboard, audio devices etc.
- Unit 2: Creating Music (30 hours) students for this unit are required to understand the musical elements of a chosen style and then complete their own composition using Logic Pro X in this style with a review
- Unit 3: Studio Recording (40 hours) students for this unit are required to plan and under-take a recording session to a particular scenario, then create a mix down of the final product and a review.
