Essa Academy is the lead school for careers in Bolton. Essa is a part of the North West Career Hub where schools and colleges work together to accelerate their provision for careers. The careers hubs are a central part of the governments Careers Strategy, published in December 2017 and we work alongside The Careers and Enterprise company. As well as this we also work closely with our Enterprise advisor who is a professional person working in the industry.

Provider Access Legislation

At Essa academy we understand the importance of ensuring all students have access to training and T-Level providers. We want to ensure all our students have the necessary knowledge and skills to work in todays labour market. The Provider Access Legislation states that all schools should provide two encounters with training and T level providers at each key phase. Working with our local apprenticeship, traineeship, and T level providers we will ensure our students can learn about the different options they have for their next steps for a successful future.

Click here to view our Provider Access Legislation policy.

Our Provider Access Legislation is currently under review.

Ofsted 2021:

'The school meets the requirements of the Baker Clause. This means that pupils in Years 8 to 11 receive information about the full range of education and training options open to them. This includes opportunities for a range of education and training providers to speak to pupils about technical educational qualifications and apprenticeships.'

We built the curriculum with the intent that students will be able to:

  • Understand the literacy of careers and be able to apply this in the world of work

  • Have knowledge of a wide range of careers sectors and the skills and qualifications you need to be successful in these areas.

  • Successfully navigate the higher education process and job application process in order to gain employment

  • Develop the resilience to learn from set backs and move forward with their career

  • Make informed choices about their chosen careers

  • Use numeracy to complete everyday tasks related to being financially stable both personally and in business

  • Understand how new technology can support career ambition and success

  • Be enterprising and be able to apply these skills to a wide range of contexts

Gatsby Benchmarks

At Essa Academy we believe that high quality careers advice, guidance and support are key in preparing students for their next steps in life and to manage those vital stepping stones from learning, training and into the world of work.

We aim to provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to make informed and aspirational choices. As such, our programme begins with Year 7 students considering the world of work and the range of career sectors available to them; it ends in Year 11 with guidance and support to help students make the next appropriate steps for them, whether that is sixth form, FE college or apprenticeship.

At Essa Academy our full time careers lead ensures that our students are given high quality, impartial information, advice and guidance in line with the Department of Education statutory guidelines and the Gatsby Benchmarks:

1. A stable Careers Programme: Essa Academy will have an embedded programme of careers education and guidance that is known and understood by students, parents, teachers, governors and employers.

2. Learning from Careers and Labour Market Information: Every student and their parents/carers will have access to good quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities.  They will have the support of an informed adviser to make best use of available information.

3. Addressing the needs of each student: Our students do have different career guidance needs at different stages.  Opportunities for advice and support, will  be tailored to the needs of every student.  Our careers programme will embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.

4. Linking curriculum learning to careers: All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers, and stem subject teachers should highlight the relevance of stem subjects for a wide range of future career paths.

5. Encounters with employers and employees: Every student should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about the world of work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace.  This will be through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes, and the Essa Experience.

6. Experiences of workplaces. Every student will develop first-hand experiences of the work place through work visits, work shadowing and work experience in Year 10, to help their exploration of career opportunities and expand their networks.

7. Encounters with Further and Higher Education: All students should understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them.  This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities, and apprenticeships.

8. Personal Guidance: Every student has the opportunity to see a qualified careers guidance practitioner, who is trained to an appropriate level and is a Registered Practitioner with the Careers Development Institute.  This adviser is available whenever significant study or career choices are being made, and timed to meet students' individual needs from Year 7 to Year 11.  This can be through Careers Guidance specific appointments or through the Drop In service.

Our careers programme will include access to information from a range of FE colleges, universities, employers, STEM ambassadors, and apprenticeship providers.

Useful information for students, parents and Essa Academy staff.

There are a number of websites available to both students and parents that can help provide information and advice.

Evaluation of the careers Programme

To ensure that our careers programme is delivered to a high standard we use a number of different ways to evaluate the provision.

We use the Compass on line self-evaluation tool on a termly basis to assess our progress in meeting the Gatsby Benchmarks. From the results we create an action plan that is focused on the areas of improvement.

Our programme is reviewed and evaluated at different points in the year where we gain feedback from students, staff, parents and carers, employers and training providers to measure the impact and identify further areas for development.

We also use current destination data to assess the impact the programme has had for our students when they leave us at 16. This information will then be used to inform the experiences our current students are offered.
