Physical Education and Food

The Health Department at Essa Academy is a very forward thinking and innovative department that offers all students a wide range of opportunities for sporting achievement, nutrition and food and academic attainment. As a faculty we aim to develop students knowledge, understanding and skills in a variety of activities, as well as educating them on the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

 

Key Stage 3 Curriculum Overview 

The key stage 3 curriculum is designed to give all students opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities i.e. practical PE and cooking lessons, and provide experiences that they will remember. 

The curriculum in structured as follows:

Year 7 

Students receive 2 one-hour lessons of both PE and Food across a two week timetable

Students are taught in either single gender groups or mixed gender groups depending on the need of the student. Most PE practical lessons at Key Stage 3 are single gender lessons whilst Food lessons are mixed gender.  

In PE lessons, students will cover 6 different sporting activities in PE lessons. Activities will follow a half term rotation 

In Food lessons, students will cover a wide range of topics within food linked to healthy eating and health and safety in the kitchen. They will also develop practical skills across a wide range of savoury and sweet dishes. Activities will follow a half term rotation 

 

Year 8 

Students receive 2 one-hour lessons of both PE and Food across a two-week timetable

In Food lessons, students will cover a wide range of topics within food linked to nutrition, and the preparation and cooking of a wide range of savoury and sweet dishes. A variety of dishes are prepared and cooked from around the world celebrating and embracing different cultures. Activities will follow a half term rotation.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum Overview

 

Core PE: 

Core PE is a legal requirement of all students. Every student in Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 and 11) is entitled to one hour of physical education per week. 

During the core PE time, students follow a pathway programme. Pathways mirror that of the Key Stage 3 curriculum and promote student’s long life participation in sporting areas, which they enjoy

 

Assessed Qualifications:

PE:

Students will undertake 5 lessons of either PE, Food and Cookery or both across a 2 week timetable.

 

If students opt to take PE in Year 9 they study the Cambridge National: Sport Studies Level 2. This course has been designed to: 

● Encourage personal development through practical participation and performance in a range of sports and exercise activities.

● Encourage learners to develop their people, communication, planning and team- working skills by having the opportunity to select from optional units available in the qualification structure.

● Provide education and training for sport, leisure and recreation employees.


● Give learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life. 

 

Food:

Students can opt to take Food in Year 9 study the NCFE: Food and Cookery Level 2 Certificate. This course has  has been designed to:

  • Encourage students to gain a knowledge and understanding of safe and hygienic preparation of the cooking environment, sources and seasonality that can affect food choices, food labels and cooking for a range of purposes.

  • Develop skills in creating menus, selecting ingredients and adapting recipes for life

  • Give learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.
