Literacy

"Literacy is the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realise his or her full potential." - Kofi Amman

At Essa Academy, literacy is one of our key priorities. We fully believe that literacy is the key to success for our students and the key to enabling our students to access their future career and life goals.

Key Goals:

  1. All students at Essa Academy have a reading age equivalent to or exceeding that of their chronological age

  2. All students at Essa Academy can understand and use a range of key vocabulary

  3. All students at Essa Academy can speak with accuracy and confidence

  4. All students at Essa Academy enjoy reading and read widely and often

Reading

"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." - Frederick Douglass

Reading is one of our key priorities for 2019 - 20. See below for the following ways we will be supporting our students' reading development this academic year:

Designated Reading Time:

At least once per week, our students will have a designated reading lesson relevant to the subject they are studying during the D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) slot. During this slot, students will read a subject-specific text relevant to their reading age taught through a range of reading strategies.

Staff CPD:

All staff will be trained on how to teach reading and facilitate appropriate and engaging reading sessions.

Intervention:

Students with a reading age below their chronological age (as indicated by the NGRT) will receive reading intervention led by the Additional Needs team.

Library:

A fully refreshed library will be available to students during all social times and before / after school where students will have access to the best books. Our library also has a full-time librarian who will ensure the library is monitored and will lead on some intervention and other whole academy literacy events.
