SEVERAL pupils at Essa Academy celebrated getting top grades in their GCSEs as Principal Martin Knowles said that he was 'blown away' with this year's results.

One pupil, Mohammed Kala, picked up a straight set of 9s.

He said: "I was very surprised to get all 9s, I was expecting a few 8s or 7s somewhere.

"It's all been very stressful because I didn't know what was going to happen during the pandemic, but now I've got all these results I'm very happy.

"I know I want to take chemistry, maths, further maths and probably physics as well at A-Level although I'm not sure what I want to do in the future."

Principal Martin Knowles added: "I think like all schools we've shown remarkable resilience in very challenging circumstances, I think the students have been absolutely immense and their resilience is second to none after what they've been through.

"We've had many instances of loss during Covid, but they've battled on and so have the staff.

"We're stood here now looking at these amazing results of these young people who deserve it more than anyone and this is their passport to future success.

"I couldn't be prouder and I couldn't be more grateful to staff, students, the community of Bolton in these very challenging times.

"I think this experience has been character building for everyone.

"We've faced something we've never had to face before and we've had to adapt with remote learning and all the other challenges we've had to face.

"We can still produce excellent outcomes for young people and hopefully enhance their lives and future prospects which is what education is all about.

"I'm blown away with the results this year, a testimony to the students' hard work and the journey Essa Academy is on.

"This is the moment in time where we celebrate the culmination of the journey."
